On Tuesday 12th September, Gridbeater became the first electric, self powered, self charging solar boat to circumnavigate Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland. Lough Neagh is the largest freshwater lake in the Uk and Ireland covering 388 square kilometres.

The distance travelled during the trip was 64km, starting just before 6am and returning some 13 hours later.

The Gridbeater Amphibian was skippered by Mark Magee one of the builders of the vessel, and he was delighted to be recorded as the first person to achieve this amazing feat. He commented ‘ the boat performed even better than expected and despite encountering waves in excess of 0.5m for over half the trip, the catamaran design proved very capable and stable due to its wave piecing twin hull design’.

The vessel is fully electric and fully solar charging heralding a new era in eco friendly inshore water transport, utility and leisure craft.

The trip was sponsored in aid of 2 very deserving charities – Lough Neagh Inshore Rescue an the Northern Ireland Air Ambulance Service. The current total amount raised is just under £1500.
